    Description

    Rare Vintage Dorrance Prosthetic Arm
This appears to be a prosthetic design by DW Dorrance leading up to his invention of the pre-split hook in 1912. It is perhaps an earlier design based upon 19th
    century
prosthetics. The thumb was articulated by means of a cable system threaded up the arm. This cable is missing from the device; however the thumb attachment cable is intact as shown. The leather arm socket and hand is in relatively good shape considering its age and assumed usage. Stamped on the metal frame is
    THE DORRANCE PAT 7.218
    .
D.W. Dorrance underwent a traumatic amputation of his hand as a result of a work place accident in his job as a lumber supervisor. Seeking a better solution for his needs, he invented the split hook in 1912 shortly before World War I and founded the company that is today known as Hosmer, Campbell, California.
