The air contains all sorts of odds
and ends, among which are
spores of various kindscells
capable of producing certain
kinds of plants when they find
themselves in congenial sur-
roundings. That is why such
substances as cheese and damp
bread, if left exposed to the air,
become mouldy. Certain
spores have found a place of
abundant food, and germinat-
ing have produced the familiar
mould a fungus. One
variety has stalked heads which ;
give rise to rows of spores.
