A JERKING RING
Many violet patches may be
seen in summer on the back of
a frond or leaf of the Male
Shield Fern. Each is a sort of
family umbrella sheltering
several sporecases. Each spore-
case when ripe contains about
48 spores. The ring of the
sporecase contracts in drying,
causing the thin part below the
end of the ring to split. When
the ring jerks suddenly, out
go the spores. Contortions of
splitting sporecases may be
easily watched under the micro-
scope.
