A LEAF SLICE
Thein tertor of a Maize Leaf
presents no points of interest
to the unaided eye. A very
thin crosswise slice, however,
seen under the microscope,
shows two skins, bounding soft
cells (the sugar-factory ), and
strengthening tissue and veins.
Each vein has two parts, the
upper which conducts water
(passed up from the root), and
the lower, along which travel
various substances made in the
leaf. The strengthening tissue
has very firm walls.
