ER-40 collets have a wide range of clamping. The sizes listed are the max sizes that the collet can hold. Collets have a range of .039" (1mm)  For example, a 1/2" ER-40 collet can clamp a max size of 1/2", but can clamp down to .461". Another example, a 1" ER-40 collet can clamp a maximum size of 1", all the way down to .961". So you have a very wide range of sizes you can use these collets for.
**These collets snap in to the holders. If you look at the ER collet nut, the hole will appear to be off center. Please see instruction sheets showing how to snap the collet in, this is how they are designed**
