    Description

Offering for your consideration an early French Faience antique statue of Mary and the Christ Child Jesus.
The figurine shows the Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus in a classic pose.
This mold was made to hold a lighted candle in the open crown of the Blessed Mother. It was used in France in antiquity during childbirth to be lighted at the bedside of a woman in labor. The practice was used  to insure a safe delivery of the baby and good health of the mother.
The statue is nicely hand painted with good details, which include the traditional four blue dot design as well as little flower sprigs.  It
    measures 10" tall.
The piece is in excellent antique condition. It is unsigned, but I believe attributable to either Malicorne or Nevers. It will compliment a Quimper collection nicely.
Please see photo # 3 which shows three old stickers.  These state that the item dates from the 18th century and that the cost was 2,200 French Francs when it was purchased years ago in the town of Auxerre.  These stickers were present when I purchased the figurine and I have not removed them.
Thank you for your visit to this very naive and charming French faience statue.
Please do preview the last photo of a 19th century Quimper fan vase, that I have listed this week.
