The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was erected by a master nicknamed Bon Fryazin, the real name of the Italian architect invited to Moscow is unknown. Construction began on the site of the old Church of John Climacus, built in 1329, the stone building of which also had a belfry in the upper part and was octagonal in plan. “At the same time (1505) another church ... John the Holy Ladder was dismantled and laid down a new church in the old place,” the chronicle tells. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was originally an octahedral pillar, a separate arrangement of which is traditional for Italian bell towers. Belfries of this type had never been built in Russia before. The majestic three-tiered building about 60 meters high had an open ringing gallery on each tier, under the arches of which bells of various sizes were placed. The tower was completed with a small dome.
In 1600, at the behest of Tsar Boris Godunov, the bell tower was built on and decorated with a new gilded dome, as evidenced by a commemorative inscription in gold letters, three ribbons encircling the drum under the very head of the temple. The height of the pillar of Ivan the Great after the addition became 81 m. For centuries, the bell tower was the tallest building in the city and its watchtower, allowing you to survey the surroundings for 25-30 km. Ivan the Great is the main architectural vertical of the Kremlin, combining all the variety of towers and domes into a single ensemble.
In 1545, a four-tier belfry was added to the tower to accommodate huge bells. In 1624, by order of Patriarch Filaret, another bell tower was erected close to the belfry under a hipped roof, behind which the name of the Filaret extension was established (architect Bazhen Ogurtsov). The ensemble of belfries was completed by the Seven-Hundred Extension, erected at the end of the 17th century. These extensions were blown up to the ground in 1812 by Napoleon's troops retreating from Moscow. Ivan the Great, whose walls at the base are five meters thick, survived the explosion. The destroyed buildings were completely restored by 1815 with the addition of some details typical of the era of classicism. The high porch was added to the belfry in 1849-1852. The bell tower has preserved unique bells of the 16th – 17th centuries; the largest bells are located on the Assumption Belfry and the Filaretova Annex. The largest of them, the Assumption Bell, cast in 1817, is located in the central opening of the belfry.
At the base of the bell tower is the Tsar Bell - the largest bell in the world, the construction of which was never completed. The bell was cast directly on Ivanovskaya Square in a huge casting pit, but in 1737, even before the end of processing and raising to the surface of the earth, it cracked and split. The Tsar Bell lay in the pit for over 100 years, after which it was erected on a pedestal.
